About

Many have tried but failed. What is the point of music festivals in a city like Miami that fails to promote the careers of the talented musicians? Both the Future Classic Festival, and Miami Music Festival tried to promote local talent, and gave them lots of exposure. But in the end, there were many complaints from both concertgoers, and musicians.

The Future Classic Festival arrived in Miami at Soho Studios on September 12th, 2018. It promised hours upon hours worth of the best local art and music, and N.E.R.D. was the main act. even performed. All this and more can be yours for $25. Afrobeta from Miami and MAYDAY! were among those who were removed completely from the concert. N.E.R.D. had to cancel the concert because it began late. These acts were not able to perform due to the fact that N.E.R.D. started very late. Also, the sound system was not up to par. It made music that is normally wonderful sound like teens in their parents’ garages. The musicians were reported to have been treated badly, not receiving water or any other refreshments that night in Miami.

Miami Music Festival took place in several locations around Miami from the 10th to the 12th of December. The promoters claimed that there would be 25 stages with the best Miami music, for $10 per day, $25 per unlimited day pass, or $50 to get a full weekend pass. As with the Future Classic Festival, musicians were not treated fairly. Aside from having to pay $35 to submit a tape, the musicians had to also pay to park. The musicians were also not paid and could not have guests lists to invite friends or family members. The festival was poorly publicized and many venues had only a handful of attendees.

Both events should have been huge hits, but what happened? Are Miamians unwilling to support local artists? I do not believe so. Miami music lovers crowd bars and clubs each weekend to catch their favorite musicians. Is it too expensive to attract people not familiar with Miami’s music scene? It may have discouraged a few concertgoers but it doesn’t solve the problem.

Is there a lack of concern for the artists and musicians as a whole? Is it a concern for maximizing profits? Is it possible that some Miami musicians are turned off by the bustle of these festivals and prefer organizing their own smaller, more intimate events? It is still to be seen. And it could vary from band-to-band. Does it just come down to a lackluster organization and planning? The organizers and promoters would see better results if they spent more time and attention on details (and musicians).

This article isn’t meant to blast organizers or promoters at the Future Classic Festival and Miami Music Festival. However, it will start a discussion about ways they can be improved for the future. These events could have been (should have been) better. This event brought together many people from Miami to share their appreciation for what they have in this wonderful city. Miami is a vibrant, dynamic city full of amazing local talent. If they are not being recognized, what’s stopping them from doing the same or even moving on to other areas to pursue their careers?
